COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- An alert for allergy sufferers this holiday season: "Christmas Tree Syndrome" could be the reason your symptoms are flaring up.

Dr. William Storms, an allergist in Colorado Springs, says the allergy syndrome is caused not only by the pine needles on Christmas trees, but also by pollen and mold.

Allergic reactions to wreaths and boughs also fall under the umbrella of Christmas Tree Syndrome.

Symptoms include irritated sinuses, sneezing, and coughing.

In some severe cases, allergic reactions to Christmas trees can even cause asthma.

Before you start throwing all of your Christmas decor away, Dr. Storms says to try treating mild symptoms with over-the-counter nasal spray or allergy pills.

If your symptoms still persist after taking over-the-counter medicines, Storms suggests seeing a doctor.
