Massive sinkhole complicates commute to school

Work began Friday to repair a growing sinkhole in Colorado Springs, and parents of students in the nearby school are preparing for the traffic impact.

Chestnut Street has been closed this week from Ellston Street to Vondel Park Drive, because of a sinkhole that formed after Monday’s storms.

Parents of children that go to the school in that area, Jackson Elementary School, said they’re concerned about its impact.

“There’s going to be a lot of traffic, and I think a lot more accidents are going to happen over here,” parent Shayla Craig said.

A District 11 spokesperson said the biggest concern is for kids who walk to school through that area. The district has a message on its website advising parents to make sure their children are supervised in that area or take an alternate route.

For students who take the bus, there won’t be a change. Although the bus will take a different road instead of Chestnut, bus stops and times will remain the same.
