Old World War II hangar could have purpose again

An old World War II hangar could be put to use again.

The Commemorative Air Force wants to turn the Blitz Hangar on Walt Basset Avenue into a World War II aircraft museum.

The group made a presentation to Pueblo City Council on Monday night.

The project would cost about $5 million and it’s trying to make the building into a National Historic Site.

The group said it’s going to encourage private businesses to sponsor the restoration, along with getting grant money. It said the city may not have to pay any money.

John Huguley, who represents the Mile High Wing of the group, said this is going to be more than just a museum.

“A bomber, a fighter, cargo planes, it doesn’t matter, the sound of those engines makes those people stop and look. It really draws the people in to find out where it came from, what it is,” he said.

The group hopes to have the restoration done by 2018.
