Hundreds walk for a missing woman’s justice

A group demands a missing woman’s justice and on Saturday they marched for it.

Hundreds of people participated in the justice walk for Kelsie Schelling and her unborn child.

This comes after Laura Saxton and Doug Schelling, Kelsie’s parents, filed a federal lawsuit Thursday against Pueblo police, the City of Pueblo and Donthe Lucas along with his family members Sara, Vivian and Dawn Shay.

The suit shows Kelsie’s parents accusing Pueblo police of mishandling their daughter’s case by tampering or destroying evidence along with disregarding tips.

“The biggest and probably most important evidence is the video surveillance that has not been professionally enhanced and that would be huge into finding out who moved Kelsie’s car,” Saxton said.

The lawsuit also shows that Schelling was pregnant with Lucas’ baby and alleges that Lucas and his mother coaxed Schelling into traveling from Denver to Pueblo on Feb. 4, 2013.

In the suit, Schelling’s parents claim that Lucas killed Schelling, and with help from his mother and grandmother attempting to cover it up.

Donthe Lucas has denied having a relationship with Schelling.

Saxton said her daughter disappearing for two years with police mishandling the case is too long.

“It was kind of a last resort. It’s something you don’t want to do but have to do it,” she said.

One of people who participated in the walk can relate to Kelsie’s parents. Elaine Redwine’s son, Dylan, disappeared in 2012. His remains were found in 2013 and his death is still under investigation.

“It breaks my heart that any of us have to be out here. It breaks my heart that we have to march to make the police do anything,” she said.

As for Saxton, she hopes the walk, signs and chants show that she and Kelsie’s supporters will never give up on their search for her.

The Pueblo Police Department said that, according to policy, it will not comment on the lawsuit.
