2 Denver sheriff’s deputies fired for use of force

Two Denver sheriff’s deputies, including one seen on video choking a former inmate who recently received $3.3 million settlement, have been fired.

Denver’s safety department announced the dismissals of Edward Keller and Thomas Ford Tuesday.

Keller’s firing comes more than three years after jail cameras captured him choking former inmate Jamal Hunter, who had sought medical attention for injuries suffered when other inmates attacked him. Hunter says another deputy ignored his screams during the July 2011 attack.

This July, Ford was captured on surveillance cameras punching an inmate. Prosecutors previously announced they wouldn’t file charges against Ford because a jury would probably find the use of force appropriate.

Director of Safety Stephanie O’Malley says deputies must treat inmates with dignity and respect.

Keller’s attorney says he will appeal the firing.
