Colo. Springs woman seriously hurt after driver crashes car into tree

Colorado Springs police said a woman was seriously hurt in a car crash that happened in the 4500 block of Fenton Road just before midnight Saturday.

She was taken to the hospital.

Officers said when they got to the crash site, a man in the car initially reported that the driver had run away from the accident.

He later told officers that he was actually driving and lied because he didn’t want to get in trouble.

The driver said he lost control of his car when he dropped his cell phone on the floor of his car. He was apparently trying to pick up the phone when the crash happened.

Officers said they do not think drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash, but said speeding may have been a factor.
