Baker refuses to bake cake for gay couple

A bakery in Lakewood refused to make a cake for a gay couple. Now, folks are pushing for a boycott of the bake shop.

It wasn’t the first time the Masterpeice Cake Shop turned down gay couples looking for a wedding cake. The owner, Jack Phillips, says until the state recognizes gay marriages he doesn’t have to. He has received more than 1,000 angry messages about his stance.

“If gays come in and want to order birthday cakes or any cakes for any occasion, graduations, or whatever, I have no prejudice against that whatsoever,” Phillips said. “It’s just the wedding cake, not the people, not their lifestyle.”

Dave Mullin and Charlie Craigdated for two years before deciding on marriage and their wedding is planned for the fall. They said they were planning on spending up to $1,000 on a rainbow wedding cake and now they feel as if their civil rights are being infringed upon.

While some are protesting the bakery and calling for a boycott, some customers said they are now ordering cakes at the shop specifically because of the stance against gay marriage.
