Authorities responded to what they say was probably an accidental shooting at John Mall High School on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Walsenburg Police, they responded to the report of someone with a gunshot wound on the school’s football field. A 22-year-old was found with a gunshot wound to his leg.

Initial investigation indicates that the gun discharge was likely accidental in nature; however, investigation is ongoing.

The man was transported by ambulance to the Spanish Peaks Regional Health Care Center, where he was then taken to another hospital by Flight for Life. The condition of the male is unknown at this time.

Law Enforcement from the Walsenburg Police Department, the Huerfano County Sheriff’s Department and the Colorado State Patrol responded.
