AFA enacts buddy system rule on trails following assaults
The United States Air Force Academy is temporarily changing the rules for people who use its trails and unimproved areas after two assaults were reported in as many months.
Details about the assaults were not released, but the Academy says one happened in December and the other happened more recently. Both incidents are still under investigation.
People who run, walk, hike or bike on the Academy’s trails are required to do so in a group of two or more. The Santa Fe Trail is not affected by the policy.
The Academy says it is taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of cadets, personnel and guests. This includes increased foot and vehicle patrols, as well as enforcing the buddy system for all personnel.
Anyone with information about the assaults is asked to contact the Air Force Office of Special Investigations at 719-333-3305. If you observe suspicious behavior or anyone acting in a suspicious manner or otherwise out of place, call the 10th Security Forces Squadron Law Enforcement desk at 719-333-2000 or dial 911.
