State Wrestling Class 3A/2A prelims
Defending champion Isaiah Gamez from La Junta got off to a strong start, winning with a second period pin in 120 pound weight class in Class 3A, “It meant a lot because I know in the past state tournaments that I’ve been in, it’s been a rough first match for me to get started. Having that good first start makes me feel good about the tournament for sure. I’ve got a big target on my back and I’m going to have to wrestle like I’ve got a target on everyone else’s back too,” says Gamez.
Another defending champ, Michael Atencio had things to do and people to see, so he put his opponent away in just 22 seconds to advance to the next round in the 120 pound weight class in Class 2A, ”Every year it’s tough. I’ve had a whole bunch of tough competitions this year. I just know if I stick to my technique, I know I’m pretty confident. I know that confidence is key to this whole tournament,” says Atencio.
Other winners including freshman Hayden Camp from Buena Vista. After a tough start in his match with Rocky Ford's Santino Mendoza, Camp fought back to win his opening match by decision in the 138 pound weight class, in Class 2A. Florence's Josh Thornton was dominant in a win by decision in the 138 pound weight class in Class 3A. Also in Class 3A, in the 145 pound weight class, Jake Hamilton from Colorado Springs Christian was in control from start to finish, as he advanced to the second round.
