Sex offender nearly stabs man, tries to steal car in Monument
Monument police were called to a grocery store Saturday morning after a man tried to steal a couple’s car at knifepoint, and it turned out that the suspect was an unregistered sex offender.
It happened at the King Soopers off Baptist Road — police say a couple walked out to their car and noticed a man standing in the parking lot suspiciously. The woman got in the car while the man started loading groceries.
That’s when the suspect, identified as Steven Weaver, walked up and tried to open the car door. The woman locked the doors, but Weaver confronted the man with a knife and demanded a ride, according to police.
Weaver came after the man with his knife and tried to stab him a few times. The man tried to get in the car, but Weaver pulled him away and got in the car himself. Weaver was then pulled out of the vehicle before taking off on foot after another struggle.
Officers caught up with Weaver in the area, and he was arrested. Police learned he was a sex offender but hadn’t registered in Colorado.
Weaver faces charges of first-degree kidnapping, attempted aggravated robbery, menacing, first-degree criminal trespass, failure to register as a sex offender, and harassment.
Police gave credit to the vehicle owners for being aware of their surroundings and being vigilant before the robbery attempt.
