117th El Paso County Fair kicked off Saturday, runs through next weekend

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Saturday was the first day of the El Paso County Fair. "Adventures Begin Here" is the overall theme of the event, but visitors can expect a new theme every day, depending on which day they visit.

There are carnival rides, rodeo events, car races, and a demolition derby at the fair. Other new events at the fair include an exotic animal zoo and an acrobatics stunt team performance.

Organizers said the event's primary focus is not just the fun activities. Instead, it's all about preserving the county's agricultural and rural heritage dating back to the first fair in 1905.

One of The El Paso County Board of Commissioners, Caroline Geitner, said they're proud to showcase the agricultural industry.

"Our rural folks are proud, and they're proud to be rural and be able to participate in the agricultural industry, which affects us all, and most of us go to the grocery store, and we get those groceries there, and we don't necessarily think about all that goes behind it but its an important part and a backbone of America truly and their proud to showcase that and be rural Americans," said Carrie Geitner.
