Preparing your plants for winter in Colorado

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- With the warmer temperatures this week, it's the perfect time to prepare your plants and gardens for the winter months ahead.

One way to make sure you're winter-ready is to drain your sprinkler system. Mike Spencer, the President of Spencer's Lawn and Garden Center in Colorado Springs, says this step is imperative to keep your system from freezing and bursting, which can be a costly fix if it happens.

Spencer also said to bring your citrus trees inside. Although citrus trees grow well in Colorado's summer months, the cold makes it impossible for the plants to grow, so he recommends keeping them potted and bringing them indoors now.

House plants also need some special treatment. Spencer says to water them less since there's less sun, but remember to fertilize them.

"Also, if you need to repot your plants, this is a great time to repot them," Spencer said.
