Colorado Springs Police officer shot and injured

OIS Galley70

A Colorado Springs Police officer is in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries after being shot Saturday night during a traffic stop over an expired registration sticker.

Investigators from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office say an officer with the Colorado Springs Police Department initiated the traffic stop near the intersection of Galley Road and Arrawanna Street just before midnight.

Investigators say the man driving the car started firing, then the officer called for backup and was shot.

Officials say the suspect got away from the scene and soon later crashed at Pikes Peak Avenue and Dunsmere Street, a mile and a half down the road. They say the driver got away again, but this time on foot.

Investigators say they don't think public safety is at risk.

No description of the suspect has been provided yet.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is the lead investigative agency for this officer involved shooting. This is an ongoing investigation. Make sure to check back with KRDO for more details.
