Body recovered from lake, family relieved

After three days of searching, Shane Michael Crandell’s body was found. He went missing in Lake Pueblo on Sunday.

“He got to his jet ski and I could tell right then that something was wrong because he tried to push off his jet ski and try and get to the shore going backwards and he started yelling for his friend for help,” said Shawn Detton, Crandell’s uncle.

Crandell’s family was at the waterside every day since then and says it’s a relief that he was finally located.

“All that goes through your mind is he’s still in the water, he’s still in the water, you just want to help or you just want to sit here,” Detton said.

Crandell’s uncle was at Lake Pueblo with him Sunday. He says they’ve been close since tragedy struck when Crandell was young.

“We’ve been real close since he was five years old and he lost his second dad to a drowning,” Detton said.

Park officials say it was a very difficult search because there was a drop off in the water where they found Crandell 32 feet down.

“Basically right down from the shoreline there is a big cliff,” said Monique Mullis, the park manager.

Mullis said the park searcheers had extra resources from Colorado Springs, which allowed them to finally locate Crandell.

“They brought more divers than we had yesterday and we have additional sonar equipment out here today as well,” Mullis said.

As for his family, the grieving can now begin with the certainty of his recovery.

“I miss him a lot already and, you know, he always called me for everything,” Detton said.
