Skier recovering after tumbling down peak

Authorities say a 64-year-old skier is recovering after tumbling more than 1,000 feet down Wilson Peak near Telluride.

The Telluride Daily Planet reported Joe Ryan of Hastings Mesa was skiing with two other people when he fell down the north-facing couloir of the peak at about noon Thursday. San Miguel County Sheriff Bill Masters says the man was on a steep slope at about 12,500 feet and was skiing on “tough, long, difficult terrain.”

Nearly two dozen sheriff’s deputies and search and rescue personnel participated in the four-hour-long rescue operation.

Masters says Ryan was taken to a hospital in Grand Junction, where he was listed in good condition Friday.
