Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign behind in donations

Ice-cold temperatures put a freeze on donations to The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign in El Paso County. Bell ringers had to stay indoors during the frigid weather last week.

“With the volunteer, we make about three times as much money in the kettle,” said Maj. Richard Larson, county coordinator for The Salvation Army. “At this time, we’re about $50,000 down from last year and that is a big hit for us.”

Larson attributes the $50,000 lag to the cold weather and also a shorter time between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Bell ringers may continue working past Christmas Day to help reach the $600,000 fundraising goal.

Contributions help The Salvation Army provide food and shelter for those in need.
