Name of pedestrian hit and killed on N. Academy Blvd. released

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - Friday, police released the name of the pedestrian hit and killed in a crash along N. Academy Blvd.

On July 12 at 4:07 a.m., officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department were dispatched to the 300 block of N. Academy Blvd. for an auto vs. pedestrian crash. Police determined the vehicle was traveling north on N. Academy Blvd. when the driver swerved in the roadway and hit a pedestrian on the east side of the street.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department and AMR arrived to try and help the pedestrian. However, the pedestrian ended up dying at the scene.

The El Paso County Coroner's Office identified the pedestrian as 45-year-old Raynard Terrence Atkins.

CSPD's Major Crash Team contacted and responded to assume the investigation. At this time, neither speed nor alcohol are believed to be factors in this investigation.

According to CSPD, this is the 25th fatal crash in Colorado Springs so far in 2023. At this time in 2022, there were also 25 fatal crashes. In the last 365 days, Colorado Springs has had 56 fatal traffic crashes.
