Closures on I-25 near County Line Road could delay traffic
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- As part of the Interstate 25 gap project, both northbound and southbound lanes will be closed at different times this weekend to allow for work to be done near County Line Road.
These closures are expected to last 16 hours at a time.
Bob Wilson, a spokesperson for the Colorado Department of Transportation, said, “In this particular instance, sometimes we have to get into the daytime hours it does become unavoidable sometimes when you have big operations. We try to minimize it but we can’t totally eliminate it.”
The closure will start at 6 p.m. Friday and will run through 10 a.m. Saturday on northbound I-25. Traffic will funnel into one lane using the northbound County Line Road off and on-ramps to detour. Starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday, the same thing will happen in the southbound lanes.
Wilson said, “You know right now we are anticipating delays up to 10 minutes, could be a little bit longer in the morning time, during the morning hours if we are not off the road around 10 o’clock. That time frame between like 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. might go a little bit longer.”
During this closure, crews will remove asphalt, install three major drainage crossings up to a 15-foot depth, and then replace the asphalt, which needs time to set. Motorists can expect to see crews setting cones as early as 5 p.m. both nights.
“Part of the problem in this particular instance is we have to allow the asphalt to set if you will. If we are taking out the old asphalt and putting in the drainage system and then putting in new asphalt but it takes a while to cool and to set,” said Wilson.
Along with the closures on the interstate, County Line Road over I-25 will also be closed each night. Local traffic should access I-25 at Colorado Highway 105 from either Monument Hill Frontage Road or Beacon Lite Road.
