Several victims seriously injured in Friday night shooting at Memorial Park in Colorado Springs
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- An investigation is underway after a drive-by shooting at Memorial Park sent three people to the hospital on Friday evening.
It happened in the area of the tennis courts just after 8:30 p.m.
Tom Stewart was at the tennis courts with his son and witnessed the incident.
"It seemed like some sort of party going on," he said. "There must have been 30 or 40 different vehicles full of people celebrating. There were balloons going up in the air. And then, it sounded like firecrackers going off. We didn't realize it was gunfire until we heard screaming. They were in a dirt parking lot across the street from the tennis court."
Lt. Jim Sokolik, of the Colorado Springs Police Department, later confirmed that the large group had gathered for a vigil to remember a recently-deceased loved one when the suspect fired several shots into the crowd from a passing vehicle.
Three people, all adult males, were shot.
"There's still a lot we don't know about this," Sokolik said.
One victim drove himself to the hospital, and the two others were taken by ambulance.
"I don't have an update on their conditions," Sokolik said.
Witnesses told police the suspect was driving an SUV and immediately sped off, but no description of the vehicle or the suspect has been released.
