Crews begin widening of ramps, adding meters along I-25 at Academy Blvd. and Woodmen Rd.

EL PASO COUNTY. (KRDO) -- Construction began Monday on widening and adding meters along I-25 near Academy Blvd. and Woodmen Rd.

The Colorado Department of Transportation is working on installing ramp metering and widening ramps along I-25 and the southbound Woodmen on-ramp, northbound and southbound Academy on-ramps, and northbound North Gate on-ramp.

According to CDOT, the majority of the project is expected to last until November. Work will begin on the I-25 southbound Woodmen on-ramp, then move north to the northbound and southbound Academy on-ramps, and will finish up at the northbound North Gate on-ramp.

Region 2 Transportation Director Richard Zamora says ramp metering helps improve safety during peak periods of high traffic by managing the number of cars merging simultaneously.

Beginning June 13, commuters should brace for the following traffic impacts:

  • Daytime work hours:
    • Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • There will be some overnight closures at each ramp for the installation of lights
  • There will be an 11-inch lane restriction
