No foul play in Fremont County camper fire that killed man, son

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office says the fire that killed a man and a child Wednesday morning in Canon City was accidental and no foul play is suspected.

Officials identified the victims as 30-year-old Pedro Pablo Ek-Rivero and four-year-old Erick Ek-Rivero. The update came late Thursday afternoon, and authorities say they died from carbon monoxide inhalation and “thermal injuries.”

Firefighters found a fifth-wheel trailer on fire, which spread to an SUV. Firefighters had it under control in less than 45 minutes. It’s still not clear what caused the fire.

A man and child are dead after a camper fire in Canon City that happened early Wednesday morning.

Thursday, the Fremont County Sheriff’s office has the property blocked off with crime scene tape. We are told a sheriff’s deputy is required to ensure no one goes on or off the property until the autopsy is complete.

The preliminary investigation into what happened has been completed, as samples and evidence has been collected for evaluation into how the fire broke out.

Fremont County Deputies and the Cañon City Area Fire Protection District were called to the 2800 block of Melvina for reports of a mobile home fire.

Upon arrival to the scene, firefighters found a fifth wheel trailer set an SUV on fire. Firefighters engaged in a defensive fire attack due to the trailer and SUV being involved. The fire was under control in less than 45 minutes.

While extinguishing the fire, crews confirmed there were two fatalities inside the home.

Authorities later said one man and one boy died in the fire. Their identities are being withheld pending autopsy and notification to next of kin.

The cause and origin of the fire are being investigated at this time.
