Walsenburg expection major snow accumulation

The green lined streets of Walsenburg could look very different 24 hours from now with another spring storm coming this way.

“We’re expecting up to 19 inches” said Leslie Klusmire, the Walsenburg city administrator.

Klusmire said plow crews are prepped and ready and even some outside resources are being put on standby.

“We don’t have that many employees and we don’t have that many snow plows. So when we get a very heavy storm, we have to get more people out to be able to deal with it and we use private snow plowers as backup,” Klusmire said.

The streets in Walsenburg are clear now, but plow operators said they’re going to wait until they see about four to six inches of snow accumulation until they hit the roads.

“We don’t have a lot of guys to go out to continuously plow all night and all day” said Chris Bechaver, plow operator for Walsenburg.

Bechaver said he expects a long day on Saturday.

“So it’s just hit every street that you can in your shift and just continuously move,” Bechaver said.

But for many of the people in Walsenburg, it’s just another springs storm.

“It’s part of living here and I noticed in the last year or so that it’ll be gone in two or three days,” said Robert Dolan, a Walsenburg resident.

And since the storm is hitting on the weekend, Dolan said he’s going to stay home.

“Probably hunker down for a day like everybody,” Dolan said.

Despite the snowy spring they’ve seen, crews are ready to fight this next round of storms.
