Severe weather leads to fatal wreck and other problems

Bad weather brought all kinds of problems to the Pikes Peak region Friday evening.

Worst of all was a fatal wreck on 8th Street near Motor City Drive.

Colorado Springs police say the driver of a small car crossed the center line during the rainstorm and slammed into a white SUV.

The driver of the car was transported to the hospital, but did not survive.

Hail once again hammered parts of the city, along with heavy rain that flooded a number of streets including 19th Street near Uintah.

It caught quite a few drivers by surprise.

Richard Rifkin said, “I turned the corner there, and it’s literally a lake, and I had about a split second to decide which way to go. I could see there were cars that were stalled out. So I instinctively turned into the Walmart parking lot and barely made it out. I mean water everywhere. It was so deep,” he recalled.

Caleb Standish’s van wasn’t so lucky.

He had to be pulled out of the water by a friend.

“The water was pretty much up to the top of the tires, and it was coming in the doors, and I had to climb out the windows to get out,” he said.

An estimated 15,000 customers of Colorado Springs west of I-25 lost power, knocking out numerous intersections.
