Firefighters in Elbert County extinguish grass fire

The Elbert County Sheriff’s Office says a small grass fire that started Monday night has been put out.

It started as several small fires which merged into one near the town of Agate northeast of El Paso County.

Deputies say it took around nine hours to extinguish the fire, which burned more than 500 acres in rough terrain. Crews from several different departments worked throughout the night on the blaze.

No one was hurt and no structures are believed to have been damaged.

Crews will continue monitoring hot spots throughout the day Tuesday.
