Springs PrideFest will continue despite Orlando massacre

Colorado Springs PrideFest organizers say July’s event will go on in spite of the deadly shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla.

PrideFest officials met with Colorado Springs police to discuss security Monday.

Police say more officers will be at this year’s event, but that doesn’t mean you’ll notice them.

Nic Grzecka, President of Colorado Springs PrideFest says he expects a big crowd this year.

“People can wave the rainbow flag and stand for a purpose not just a celebration. We’re focusing on why we’re here and why we’re standing next to each other,” Grzecka said.

The event is scheduled to take place on July 9 and 10 at America the Beautiful Park.

Over the weekend, organizers of Denver PrideFest said they also plan to move forward with their event.

Organizer Debra Pollock says parade and rally participants in Denver have always been security-conscious, but members of the GLBT Community Center of Colorado have also received training on how to deal with active-shooter situations.

Pollock says the organizers will have metal detectors and fences set up at Civic Center Park for the rally, and there will also be security on the parade route and people will be searched as in past years.

Denver PrideFest is scheduled for June 18 and 19 at Civic Center Park.

Pueblo PrideFest will take place August 20 and 21 at Mineral Palace Park.
