Colorado Springs community celebrates with Juneteenth breakfast

Colorado Springs community members gathered in honor of Juneteenth on Thursday morning.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.

The Colorado Springs NAACP chapter hosted the event, in conjunction with Colorado College.

It featured a breakfast, live music from New Direction Baptist Church and speeches from community members.

Our very own Mekialaya White and Eric Fink emceed the event.

The goal is to create unity within our community by fighting discrimination.

“It’s very important for us to reach out to our community… because are all in this cause together.” Lisa Villanueva, Colorado Springs NAACP President explained.

It was the first event of its kind, but organizers say they plan to have more in the future.
