Springs woman in backseat of parked vehicle scares possible carjacker

Police are searching for the people responsible for possibly burglarizing one vehicle and attempting to carjack another in the parking lot of a Colorado Springs shopping center.

Just before 8 p.m. on Thursday, the Colorado Springs Police Department got a call about an attempted carjacking in a parking lot off the 7700 block of North Academy Boulevard.

A newer model black Toyota Highlander reportedly pulled up next to a Ford pickup truck and a black male got out of the backseat. The man went up to the Ford and opened the unlocked driver’s door. He was seen by witnesses holding a screwdriver in his right hand. Two juveniles and an adult were sitting in the backseat waiting for their parents inside the store when they noticed the man opening the door. The adult female screamed and the suspect ran and got back into the Highlander.

Police are still unsure whether the suspect intended to steal the vehicle or to burglarize it.

During the same time frame, another full size Ford truck nearby in the same parking lot had been burglarized. The door lock appeared to have been punched with a tool. The owner of the truck told police a handgun had been stolen from the center console.

An additional black male and a black female were also seen in the Highlander and are wanted for their involvement.
