Habitat for Humanity buys Woodland Park motel

Habitat for Humanity of Teller County plans to turn an empty motel into housing for low income families.

The Lofthouse Motel, 222 E. Henrietta Avenue, had 24 guest rooms. They will be transformed into nine condos.

Habitat for Humanity of Teller County has housed five families this year. Three in Cripple Creek and two in Sherwood Forest. That number will increase to 14 with the completion of the Lofthouse makeover.

In order for a family to qualify for affordable housing they must meet the 30-60 % AMI (Area Median Income) criteria which classifies them as being in the low to medium income bracket.

Habitat for Humanity homes are not given away. Families must qualify for the home, must complete a home buyer education course and must complete 300 to 400 hours of “sweat equity” projects.

Rehab at the Lofthouse will begin in May. The project is scheduled to be completed by September 15.
