Do facts matter in presidential politics?

A statement by Hillary Clinton that ISIS is using video of Donald Trump for recruiting is still grabbing headlines – two days after the Democratic debate.

“He is becoming ISIS’ best recruiter,” Clinton said on stage in New Hampshire. “They are going to people showing Donald Trump videos insulting Islam and Muslims in order to recruit.”

Trump demanded an apology but Monday afternoon the Clinton campaign said “Hell no.”

Kathleen Ricker with the Pikes Peak Democrats thinks Clinton’s statement is true

“Because ISIS know everything we’re doing and take everything we say and use it for promotional advantages,” Ricker said.

That memorable line from Clinotn is getting a lot of attention, but at this time there is no evidence to back up her claim as a fact.

Trump is pouncing. On Twitter the GOP frontrunner called Clinton a liar and touted his own record for telling the truth.

“I’ve been right more than anyone else has been right,” Trump said. “He insists he saw Muslims in New Jersey celebrating when the World Trade Center collapsed on 9/11 but hasn’t produced any proof.

“Facts should matter a lot, they don’t always,” Daniel Cole, the executive director of the El Paso County Republican party said. “Truth is our expectation, it should be our standard.”
