EPA knew disaster was possible one year before Animas River Spill
New documents show the EPA was aware of a potential disaster a year before the Animas River Spill.
The documents released late Friday night follow weeks of prodding from news agencies.
Among them is a June 2014 work order for a planned cleanup that stated conditions “could result in a blowout” at the collapsed entrance of the mine.
EPA contract workers spilled three million gallons of contaminated waste water from the Gold King Mine, near Durango, into the Animas River on August 5th.
The toxic mix spread to water ways in New Mexico and Utah.
