Police: Loaded gun found in student’s backpack at Thornton High School

Thornton Police say a 10th grader brought a loaded gun to school Friday.

School officials received a tip about the gun at 8:55 a.m. on August 21, 2015.

Police say The School Resource Officer began investigating and found a 9mm handgun in the boy’s backpack. They say the gun was loaded with three rounds in the magazine.

The 15-year-old was taken into custody and is under investigation for carrying a concealed weapon on school grounds and being a juvenile in possession of a handgun.

The teen was taken to the Adams County Juvenile Detention Facility.

Police say there are no indications that the student had made any threats to students or staff at the school.

Investigators are still trying to figure out who the gun belongs to.
