Rain contributing to tree roots clogging wastewater lines

Heavy rain this summer sent water rushing through streets and sewer lines, providing a home for roots to thrive and expand. Colorado Springs Utilities says its a problem homeowners need to be aware about.

“All of this area broke off over here,” said Ralph Valdez.

Tree branches and twigs cover Valdez’s lawn and have clogged his pipes up before.

“It’s backed up the sewer lines a couple of times. We’ve had the city out there, cleaning it completely out, because there were too many,” said Valdez.

It’s a citywide problem CSU is working to fix. Crews send a camera through the sewer lines to find the trouble spots. They have to use a 312 foot root saw to clean the sewer line.

“These roots are potentially flooding anyone that’s upstream from these guys. That’s why it’s important to get your service line cleaned,” said Mike Smith, sewer line inspector with CSU.

Smith says rain is a big reason why tree roots grow in sewer lines, and if they aren’t taken care of, it can become costly for homeowners.

“It can cost $100 to $10,000, so failure to establish a maintenance program can be very expensive,” said Nick Verdi, CSU operation supervisor.

Maintenance is more tedious for people living in older homes. It’s recommended the sewer line is cleaned every six months. Crews also recommend keeping yards clear of debris.

“We’ve had quite a few of them break and I’ve had to have them taken out of the yard,” said Valdez.

If toilets aren’t flushing or water isn’t draining properly, crews say those are signs to look for of having root issues. Residents should contact a plumbing and drain service or CSU.
