Keeping safe when hiking in the high country

Recent deaths and disappearances in Colorado have highlighted safety concerns on trails in our area.

Recent rains have only added to potential problems.

There is plenty of beautiful back country hiking in Colorado, but with many trails unmarked, it can be easy to get lost.

Summer is also dangerous because of the number of inexperienced people on the trails.

Parks officials told us that safety can never be guaranteed, but there are ways to stay safe.

“Hike with a friend. That way if you do become injured or lost you’ve got a buddy to help you find your way out or assist you if you’re hurt,” said Kurt Schroeder, from Colorado Springs Parks and Recreation.

Schroeder wants to remind everyone that it is always important to tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back if you do plan to venture out alone.
