ISIS uses deep web to raise money, recruit fighters

U.S. pentagon scientists plan to go into the Dark Web to hunt down ISIS supporters who use the secret Internet to raise money and recruit followers.

The Dark Web is the part of the Internet that is not indexed, and websites cannot be found through a simple Google search. The Dark Web is expansive and it could be difficult for intelligence experts to seek out ISIS content hidden in it.

Sites within the Dark Web allow browsers to hire hit man, purchase stolen credit card information and buy illegal drugs. A concerned user told KRDO NewsChannel 13 last year that he had seen websites that allowed users to donate to terrorist organizations.

The man asked to remain anonymous because he feared the repercussions of coming forward.

“You’re talking about disrupting cartels, you’re talking about disrupting drug dealers,” said the man. “If you’re not prepared for it, is a very corrupting place.”

This secret Internet is a haven for the terrorist group to recruit members and maybe even plan attacks. Intelligence experts plan to go in and chase ISIS down.

University of Colorado Colorado Springs public affairs professorEdin Mujkic said it’s a necessary fight now and for the future.

“Even if, hypothetically, ISIS is destroyed next year, that doesn’t guarantee that some other group isn’t going to show up and use the same tactics because now they learned from them,” said Mujkic.

ISIS has been tech-savvy since its inception, using social media sites to recruit young fighters all over the world.
