Police say suicidal man threw knives at officers

Police say a man barricaded himself in his house, periodically stepping out to throw knives at officers.

The standoff began at around 7:00 a.m. Monday in the 1000 block of Sherman Ave. in Caon City.

Police say Roy Mondragon, 49, was reportedly suicidal, armed with knives and threatening to blow up his house.

Police say some of the knives that Mondragon threw narrowly missed the officers.

Officers used “less lethal” shotgun rounds and a stun gun to subdue Mondragon.

Mondragon was then taken to St. Thomas More Hospital. He is expected to recover.

Police say an earlier fight with his wife prompted the standoff. Mondragon’s wife was not home when police arrived.

Two children, ages 8 and 10, were in the home when officers arrived. They were safely evacuated from the house.

The incident is under investigation. Police did not say what charges Mondragon may face.
