Colorado Springs woman displaced after basement fire

An elderly woman was displaced after a fire Thursday morning in Colorado Springs.

Firefighters were called to the fire in the 1000 block of Swope Ave. around 8 a.m. The fire was contained less than 15 minutes after the initial call.

The fire department said the fire started in the basement of a home, and the woman was able to get out safely after hearing her smoke detectors.

“Working smoke alarms are your number one way to make sure that you have a way to get out of your home safely in case of a fire,” Cpt. Steve Oswald with Colorado Springs Fire Department said. “It gave her enough time to get out of the home without injury.”

The Red Cross is helping the woman find temporary housing.
