Expert weighs in on Bach’s decision not to run for re-election

Mayor Steve Bach’s decision not to run for re-election will benefit some of the candidates running for mayor, according to a Colorado Springs political analyst.

On Monday Bach announced he will not seek a second term in the April election. He was elected in May 2011.

“I’m proud of what our team has accomplished, I just think this is the right time,” he said.

Colorado College professor Bob Loevy wasn’t surprised.

“He delayed way too long,” Loevy said. “If he were serious about running for re-election, we should’ve gotten an announcement last summer or even earlier.”

There are currently five people running for mayor: El Paso County Commissioner Amy Lathen, State Attorney General John Suthers, former Colorado Springs Mayor Mary Lou Makepeace, real estate agent Justine Herring and former Colorado Springs Councilman Joel Miller.

Bach’s decision not to run will have an impact on the remainder of the race, according to Loevy.

“This of course makes John Suthers one of the most powerful candidates running. It also puts Mary Lou Makepeace, a former mayor, in a strong position,” he said.

Loevy predicts a runoff election between Suthers and Makepeace.

The election will take place April 7. If voters elect a new mayor then, he or she will take office April 21. If there is a runoff, the new mayor will take office June 2.
