Pueblo police say red light cameras are cutting down on accidents
The amount of accidents in some of Pueblo’s most dangerous intersections have been cut nearly in half because of red light traffic cameras.
That’s according to Pueblo police.
There are red light cameras on Highway 50 and Norwood Avenue, Prairie Avenue and Thatcher Avenue, along with Prairie Avenue and Northern Avenue.
In 2013, there were 60 combined vehicle accidents at the three intersections.
So far in 2014, that number went down to 37.
Pueblo police Sgt. Howard Jackson said the goal of the cameras was not stop accidents completely, but to cut down on serious and fatal accidents.
He said most of the accidents that get caught on camera are minor accidents, like fender benders.
Monica Morgan owns a shop near one of the red light traffic cameras on Highway 50 and Norwood Avenue. She said since the cameras were put up, she feels safer.
“I feel like it really help cuts down on the accidents, and speeding and red light running,” she said.
If you are caught on camera running a red light, it is a $75 fine.
