UPDATE: Apparent booby trap found on trail in Pike National Forest

The U.S. Forest Service is looking for information after someone placed an apparent booby trap on a trail in the Rampart Range area of the Pike National Forest.

The device was configured in a spike strip fashion and buried on the trail.

The forest service says the wire spikes were buried in the trail bed so that wheeled vehicles would be damaged and unsuspecting hikers could be injured.

“The safety of the public and our employees is our highest concern,” said Laura Mark, special agent in charge for the Rocky Mountain Region. “Anyone who has information about this is encouraged to contact the Forest Service Law Enforcement Officials.”

Trails and Open Space Coalition Executive Director Susan Davies said this incident is a reminder to be watchful.

“Iwas really horrified. I couldn’t believe people would do that and endanger the folks that are out there,” said Davies.

She said while this incident happened near Rampart Reservoir, she said it is a possibility on any trail or open space.

“Hopefully this is a fairly isolated incident and most people will go out and use our system. What I would say to people, you need to look at your surroundings,” said Davies.

Chris Cullins was biking in Red Rock Canyon Open Space and said the news was disappointing.

“It’s obviously frustrating. You know, one of the things you depend on is knowing a trail and knowing it’s safety,” said Cullins.

The forest service says anyone who provides credible information that leads to an arrest and/or conviction may be eligible for a cash reward.
