One man injured in early morning shooting

El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating an early morning shooting.

Deputies tell us they responded to a call shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday at a home on Tilden Street.

When they arrived, they discovered a 33-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the back. The man, Leonard James, was taken to a local hospital in serious but stable condition.

Deputies say there had been a gathering amongst friends at the home when the gun discharged, hitting the victim.

After interviewing people in the home, 31-year-old Ian Whittaker of Widefield was arrested and booked into the Criminal Justice Center on $10,000 bond for Second Degree Assault, class 4 felony, Prohibited Use of a Weapon, class 2 misdemeanor, and Reckless Endangerment, class 3 misdemeanor.

Alcohol and marijuana appear to be factors in this case, deputies said.
