Pueblo shooter gets 6 years in prison

A Pueblo man who shot and killed the father of his girlfriend two years ago was sentenced to six years in prison Friday, our news partners at the Pueblo Chieftain report.

District Judge Jill Mattoon gave David Luna, 23, the maximum term she could after ruling that the aggravated range of up to 12 years was not available.

A Pueblo jury convicted Luna of reckless manslaughter in June after hearing two weeks of testimony that suggested Luna acted in defense of himself and his girlfriend when they encountered her father, Richard Maes, 49, on Eighth Street near the Midtown Shopping Center.

Luna has been in Pueblo County jail since his arrest in August 2010 and was given credit for 808 days he spent in custody
