Scammers pose as Red Cross volunteers

A southern Colorado Springs neighborhood was hit by scammers Thursday afternoon.

Angie, a resident in the area, said she opened her garage door, and the two teenage boys approached her.

According to Angie, the boys said they were with the Red Cross and were collecting cash for the Waldo Canyon fire victims. To which Angie responded, “oh yeah?”

Angie is a 45-year Red Cross volunteer and immediately knew this was a scam.

The boys presented Angie with a fake Red Cross badge.

“When I showed them my badge, compared to theirs? Off they went,” said Angie.

Angie said the Red Cross will not go door-to-door to collect funds and wants everyone to be extra-cautious when making donations.

She said she does not appreciate these “punks” taking advantage of people during such a devastating time.

“Let’s act decent, and let’s have compassion for other people because one of these days, you might be in those shoes,” said Angie.
