Armed Gas Mask Robber Arrested
Colorado Springs Police have arrested a man after an attempted convenience store robbery Monday night.
Officers responded to the Loaf ‘N Jug store at 3705 Drennan Rd. around 11:00 p.m. after reports of a suspicious person. A witness told police he/she saw a man wearing all black clothing, what appeared to be a gas mask, and carrying a handgun. The suspicious man was apparently peaking around the corner toward the front of the store.
When officers arrived they saw the described man run behind the store and into a drainage ditch. An officer chased the suspect but lost sight of him. Officials contained the area and K-9 officers also responded to assist with the search.
During the search, a police sergeant saw a suspicious car in a nearby mobile home park. The car had suspicious items plainly visible inside and was listed to 20-year-old Gregory Schultz.
As the search continued, officers spotted and chased the attempted robbery suspect into an apartment building on Lakehurst Dr. where he was detained in a third floor hallway. The man was identified as Schultz.
Investigators recovered a large handgun dropped near the scene. Police say the attempted robbery matches another case on March 6th where a suspect with the same description, namely wearing a gas mask and carrying a large handgun, robbed the Diamond Shamrock store at 2455 Arlington Dr.
Schultz will be charged with Attempted Robbery at the Loaf ‘N Jug and Aggravated Robbery at the Diamond Shamrock.
