CO Health Officials Talk Safe Sex, Family Planning

State health officials launched a new campaign this week to get young adults educated and talking about safe sex and family planning.

Dr. Chris Urbina is the Chief Medical Officer of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

He said among single women in their 20s, seven out of 10 pregnancies are unplanned. Among unmarried men in their 20s, he said more than half of pregnancies are unplanned.

Those statistics are a growing concern for health officials who say that nearly half of all pregnancies in Colorado are considered “unwanted.”

The new website aimed at young adults, ages 18 to 29, is called “Beforeplay.” It provides information on topics such as birth control, pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

On the website, there are links to Facebook and Twitter. Health officials said the demographic they are targeting is most likely to seek information online.

With such an abundance of information on the Web, Urbina said it is important for young adults to get the right information.

He said there are lots of resources and contacts for website users to seek out. He also highlighted the real-life stories shared by young people on the website.
