Pete Carey Confirmed Colorado Springs Police Chief

Pete Carey has officially been named Police Chief for the Colorado Springs Police Department.

Mayor Steve Bach announced Carey has been named Police Chief on Tuesday afternoon.

Chief Carey was named interim chief on Oct. 11, 2011, a week after Police Chief Richard Myers announced his retirement.

On Oct. 27, 2011, Mayor Bach suspended the search for a new Colorado Springs Police Chief, saying Carey would stay on board for a trial-run.

“Chief Carey has demonstrated flexibility, vision and leadership in the challenging role of interim chief,” said Mayor Bach. “We are confident in his substantial abilities and look forward to working with him in the important work of keeping Colorado Springs one of the safest large cities in America.”

Chief Carey was named deputy chief in January 2008. Since he joined the Colorado Springs Police Department in 1984, he has been a Master Patrol Officer, field training officer, narcotics detective, and crisis negotiator. Carey has held supervisory positions in the Patrol Bureau; Metro Vice, Narcotics and Intelligence Unit; Training Academy; Specialized Enforcement Unit and Major Crimes Unit.

Chief Carey holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. He is a graduate of the 229th Session of the FBI’s National Academy and a 2010 graduate of the Senior Management Institute of Policing.

He is married and has four children.
