Beware Of Microsoft Scam

Scammers are using Microsoft to fool people into believing something is wrong with their computer.

The scam starts with a phone call from someone claiming to be a software expert for Microsoft.

The cold caller tells the victims that their computer has errors or viruses that need to be checked. They direct the victim to log onto a website that allows the caller to take control of their computer.

Michael Couron received a call on Tuesday and said he knew right away it was a scam.

?I started to ask questions because Microsoft doesn?t call its customers,? Couron said.

According to Microsoft, the only time a representative calls is when a customer calls first and requests a call back.

Couron said the cold caller kept insisting he go online.

?He was trying to hack in to my computer and steal my personal information,? he said.

Couron told the caller he had virus protection and hung up. He wants to warn the community to beware.

?A lot of people that don?t know too much about computers could turn around and think ?I better take care of this right away,?? he said.

Couron called Microsoft and reported what happened. He was told that cold callers will also try and convince victims to pay for a service to fix their computer.

If a customer is not sure, hang up and call Microsoft or the police.
