Marshall Zelinger’s Observations Of Capitol Security

KRDO – I’ve covered politics for NEWSCHANNEL 13 since 2004. In the last three years,I’ve gone through security at the Capitol three times; when the Governor gives hisState-Of-The-State Address. On that day in early January, all visitors to the Capitol must go through a basement entrance and walk through metal detectors. The Colorado State Patrol is in charge of the security. It’s set up much like an airport or courthouse.

On every other visit to the Capitol since 2004, I’ve freely walked into that same basement entrance, the West Steps and South Steps entrance, with no security. The Governor has his own security detail, the House and Senate Chambers have their own Sergeant-at-Arms who secure our elected representatives. Other than that, anyone is free to enter the Capitol and walk around the three levels inside.

Senate Minority Leader Andy McElhany has already said a change to security will most likely be discussed. While it may be necessary, I hope it won’t be a deterrent for people who want to visit the inside.
