Colorado Springs man arrested after kidnapping incident, say deputies

Sheriff’s deputies in Pitkin County say a Colorado Springs man is in custody after a hostage situation in Independence Pass.

Investigators say they received several 911 calls around 5 p.m. Wednesday reporting a man who was pointing a gun at people in the area. Responding deputies also reported hearing shots fired.

Deputies found the armed man, who was later identified as Brolin McConnell, 30, of Colorado Springs. McConnell was holding another man against his will near two vehicles, according to law enforcement.

Deputies evacuated people from the area and were able to surround McConnnell.

McConnell fired several shots but investigators say they aren’t sure if those shots were intended to hit deputies.

A short time later McConnell’s hostage escaped and deputies surrounded McConnell. McConnell then surrendered peacefully.

He is now facing charges of first-degree kidnapping and prohibited use of a weapon.
