Snow-covered sidewalks causing problems for woman in motorized wheelchair

If you think you’re having a hard time getting around with all this snow, it could be worse.

“I gotta move fast or I might get stuck,” said Carrissa McDonald.

In snowy and slushy conditions, McDonald has a hard time getting around in her electric wheelchair. Since the past storm dumped so much snow, city crews have no choice but to plow onto sidewalks.

“There is nothing shoveled here for the sidewalk at all. I can’t go on the sidewalk. I have to be on the street,” said McDonald.

McDonald says the roads are so bad, it usually takes her 15 minutes to run an errand, now it takes her up to an hour.

“Almost an hour just to get there and if it weren’t for the help of people, I’d be stuck in several places,” said McDonald.

“People will come by and help her. Thanks to the people in Colorado Springs and nice citizens they help her out,” said Jonathan McDonald.

McDonald’s son also helps her get around but she says she wouldn’t need the help if the roads were plowed better.

“It’s dangerous for everybody not just for me. For the cars as well having to go veer around me onto on coming traffic. I’m not happy about putting them at risk,” said McDonald.

We spoke with the city who said they’re aware of areas that still need to be plowed and are working as fast as they can. They also have a list of residents with disabilities who may need additional plowing.

After we called the city, they sent a crew out to McDonald’s house to make sure her daily route was cleared.
